RICHMOND, Ky. (KT) — Steve Lochmueller’s tenure as athletics director at Eastern Kentucky University has ended.

Lochmueller resigned Monday after more than four years on the job. He was named to the post in April  of 2015. Lochmueller previously served in the business sector and was known as a former basketball player at the University of Kentucky.

In his resignation letter addressed to EKU Vice President for Student Affairs Skip Daugherty, Lochmueller stepped down to “pursue a new opportunity.”

“I know the athletic department here at Eastern Kentucky University will continue on and achieve many more successes with the foundation we have built over the last several years.”

Eastern President Michael Benson thanked Lochmueller for “his years of service to EKU Athletics.”

“He has helped provide a quality experience for our student athletes and oversaw some vital infrastructure and personnel changes for our athletics programs,” Benson said. “We wish him the best in his future endeavors.”

The university will conduct a national search, while Mark Sandy, who previously served at Eastern and most recently retired at Ball State, will serve in an interim role.

“I am excited to return to EKU, re-connect with colleagues and make new connections in the athletics department,” Sandy said. “I look forward to helping the University navigate this transition smoothly to ensure the continued success of EKU Athletics.”

Benson said EKU is “committed to the overall success of our student athletes and competing at the highest level.”

“We will seek a leader who will build on a long history of championship teams and continue improving the student and fan experience of Colonel athletics,” Benson said.
