Churches asked to join committee in fasting, prayer for next KBC leader

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (KT) – Wes Fowler, the chairman of the search committee for the executive director-treasurer of the Kentucky Baptist Convention, is asking for a convention-wide day of fasting and prayer on June 17.

Fowler, the senior pastor for First Baptist Church of Mayfield, said in a video announcement that they are “nearing the end of this process” and seek wisdom and discernment.

“I can’t think of anything more appropriate than to ask our entire convention to pray for us as we make this critical decision,” he said.

The search committee is trying to fill the seat vacated by Dr. Paul Chitwood, who left in November after serving in the role for seven years to become the president of the International Mission Board.

“This is a critical decision for our convention,” said Jim Donnell, a co-interim executive director-treasurer along with Curtis Woods. “We covet your prayers with our search committee in the coming days as they seek God’s will for the next leader of the Kentucky Baptist Convention.”

Fowler said he has asked the committee and the candidates for the position to fast and pray on June 17 and he was inviting churches in the KBC to join them.

A month ago, the committee said they had gone through a “thorough process” in trying to identify the candidate that God wanted to lead the KBC and would interview leading candidates in June.

“Pray for the Lord to give us wisdom and guide us, (give us) discernment, unity,” Fowler said. “Pray for our committee that we’ll follow the Lord’s leading (and) we’ll seek His will.”

Fowler said the committee takes the responsibility put before them seriously.

“We covet your prayers and are thankful for your faithfulness,” he said at the conclusion of the video.
