ASHLAND, Ky. (KT) – Pauline Ruth “Polly” Judd, the matriarch of the famous Judd family and called a “firecracker of a spirited woman” by a friend, died Wednesday at Bridgeport Health and Rehab Center in Portsmouth, Ohio.
Pauline, 91, was the mother of Naomi Judd and grandmother to Wynonna Judd of the country singing duo The Judds. She is also grandmother to actress Ashley Judd.
Pauline was also a former city commissioner in Ashland and a member of First Baptist Church in Ashland.
State Sen. Robin Webb, a close friend, wrote about her relationship with her Thursday in a post on Facebook.
“From the first time I met her years ago, it was apparent that she would be a source of advice, opinion, inspiration and friendship, and she was all of that and more,” Webb wrote. “We shared some good times, deep discussions about good shows and food! The true matriarch of the Judds has gone on to glory. Please remember the family in your thoughts and prayers. Our region has lot a great ambassador and the world has lost a firecracker of a spirited woman that we love.”
She is survived by her son Mark Judd and his wife Middy of Elizabethtown, Kentucky; daughters Naomi Judd (Larry Strickland) of Leipers Fork, Tennessee, and Margaret Mandell of Los Angeles, California; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are set for Monday at 11 a.m. at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland and will be officiated by her son Mark Judd. Visitation will be held on Sunday at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, friends make contributions in her memory to Hope’s Place, 1100 Greenup Avenue, Ashland, KY 41101.
