LOUISVILLE, Ky. (KT) – In July 2021, 418 unborn lives were lost to abortion. The staggering total surged past numbers recorded in early summer and late spring months, setting up July to be one of the deadliest months this year.
According to a report issued by the Vital Statistics Branch and accessed through an Open Records request, 116 abortions were performed at or before six weeks gestation. Eighty-nine percent happened within the first trimester of pregnancy.
While over half of reported abortions were performed through medical, non-surgical procedures, 179 babies were aborted using the suction curettage method, also known as a vacuum aspiration abortion. The procedure is commonly used during the first trimester.
Though the report detailed abortions performed within the state of Kentucky, residents of Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee, North Carolina and Texas also sought to terminate their pregnancies at the state’s two licensed abortion care providers.
The EMW Women’s Surgical Center performed 352 abortions; Planned Parenthood in Louisville performed 64 abortions.
All data related to abortions provided in Kentucky are made available to the public through the Open Records Act.
