Mountain momentum: Eastern Ky. puts four teams in state finals

It was a big night for mountain football in the Kentucky high school semifinals on Friday night.

Eastern Kentucky neighbors Paintsville and Pikeville, separated by about 30 miles, will play for the Class A state championship on Friday at Kroger Field after posting victories.

Paintsville thumped Louisville Kentucky Country Day 44-20 and Pikeville blanked Louisville Holy Cross, 36-0.

Belfry, a familiar face in the KHSAA championship, shocked Louisville DeSales 15-14 in overtime by successfully converted a two-point conversion. The Pirates will play Bell County in the Class 3A championship on Friday.

Johnson Central overwhelmed Madisonville-North Hopkins 52-14 to reach the Class 4A finals for the fourth year in a row. The Golden Eagles will meet Boyle County in Saturday’s final. Both teams bring 14-0 record into the championship game.

Somerset defeated Breathitt County 40-25 and plays Mayfield in the Class 2A final.
