Sheriff’s deputy dies in ATV crash; 7-year-old injured


ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (KT) - An off-duty sheriff’s deputy was killed and a 7-year-old child was critically injured in an ATV crash in Hardin County on Friday.

Deputy Kevin Johnson was riding the ATV with the child as a passenger when he lost control, ran off the road and hit a fence, according to a Kentucky State Police news release.

The Hardin County coroner’s office pronounced Johnson, 36, of Elizabethtown, dead at the scene. The child had life-threatening injuries and was taken by helicopter to Norton Children’s Hospital.

The sheriff’s office called the state police for assistance at the scene of the collision at about 8 p.m. State police said they are investigating.

Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene. The Hardin County Sheriff's Department announced Johnson's death in a posting on social media.

"Please keep the deputy's family and the Hardin County Sheriff's Office in your thoughts and prayers," it said.
